Address847 Chicago Ave., Suite 200, Evanston
DetailsIn order to raise awareness for mental health in the North Shore, nearly 50 students and teachers combined will Chalk the Walk on Thursday, May 24 from 12:30 -1:30 p.m. at Fusion Academy Evanston, a one-to-one (one teacher, one student) school in the area. The event follows a movie screening also slated at the school, in partnership with the Yellowbrick Consultation and Treatment Center, called “Angst” on Monday, May 7 from 6:30– 8:45 p.m. The screening aims to raise funds for anxiety and depression awareness and treatment. Chalk the Walk celebrates Mental Health Awareness Month, and was inspired by students in grades 6-12 at Fusion Academy Evanston. The students will chalk tips on coping with anxiety in a healthy way, statistics to educate the public on mental health and images to encourage empowerment. “Angst,” which has been featured in Today, People and the Associated Press, aims to educate viewers on anxiety and its sociological effects, coping mechanisms and resources from mental health experts. Continuing Education Units will also be offered onsite for local professionals to maintain their licenses at an additional cost. Tickets for the screening are $10, and all net proceeds from the event will be donated to the Anxiety and Depression Association of America. “Raised in the North Shore myself, I’m all too familiar with the extreme pressure to succeed—and it’s only increasing. That’s one of the reasons anxiety is a growing epidemic, and it’s important we come together as a community to discuss what we can do to support the students it affects,” said Loni Itah, MA, LCPC, the director of admissions and outreach for Fusion Academy Evanston, who holds a master’s in school counseling from Roosevelt University. “We’re thrilled our students want to raise awareness through Chalk the Walk, and we’re also eager to partner with Yellowbrick to bring the Angst screening to the community, raising funds for the treatment of anxiety and depression across the country.” Local teens will also be encouraged to share their experiences at both events. Many Fusion students have found speaking out about their anxiety has helped them to cope and get connected to the resources they need. Community members are encouraged to join Fusion Academy students and teachers at Chalk the Walk. Chalk will be available at 847 Chicago Ave., Suite 200, Evanston all day Thursday, May 24. To RSVP for the screening of “Angst” at One Rotary Center, located at 1560 Sherman Ave. in Evanston, please visit www.FusionEvanston.com.
