Submitted by the City of Evanston

Five Things to Know When It Snows

To help keep streets and sidewalks safe and accessible for all community members this winter, the City of Evanston is reminding residents of snow parking restrictions, convenient notification methods, shoveling guidelines and other helpful tips as part of Winter Preparedness Week, November 12-18.

Residents can review important winter information by watching the City's new video, "Five Things to Know When It Snows," visiting cityofevanston.org/snow, or calling/texting 847-448-4311. The City will also share reminders and tips throughout the week on Facebook and Twitter.

  • Call/text 847-448-4311 from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., Monday through Friday. Hours of operation will be extended during snow events.

Parking
In the event of accumulated snowfall, the City may enforce temporary parking restrictions.

  • A Snow Route Parking Ban affecting main streets may be declared after two inches or more of snow
  • A Snow Emergency affecting side streets may be declared after four inches or more of snow

During a Snow Route Parking Ban or Snow Emergency, parking on the street is illegal for the duration of the time indicated on the street signs posted at the beginning and end of each block even if plows have been through, as plowing and salting operations may require return visits by City trucks.

When snow is present on roadways, voluntarily abiding by posted parking rules helps City plows clear snow to the curb. Residents can also help facilitate snow removal by parking as close to the curb as possible, clear of alleyways and intersections, so City trucks and emergency vehicles have access to the streets.

To review information about parking restrictions, please visit cityofevanston.org/snow.

Shoveling
Property owners are responsible for clearing sidewalks adjacent to their property within 24 hours after a snowfall of four inches or more. Paths should be at least 36 inches wide to allow everyone to use the sidewalk, including those with wheelchairs, walkers or strollers. Additionally, residents are encouraged to clear the area surrounding fire hydrants. Keeping fire hydrants visible and accessible from the street can save precious time in an emergency.

Landlords are responsible for keeping sidewalks, parking lots and all common areas, including open stairwells, free from all hazardous conditions at all times. To report a snow removal violation, please call/text 847-448-4311.

Residents who need assistance shoveling their property, or who would like to volunteer to help elderly and disabled neighbors shovel, are encouraged to register for the City's Senior & Disabled Persons Snow Shoveling Program online at cityofevanston.org/shoveling or by calling/texting 847-448-4311.

Although the City does not plow alleys, refuse and recycling collections continue. Residents are encouraged to clear snow to allow crews to access refuse containers.

For more information, please call/text 847-448-4311. For convenience, residents in Evanston may simply dial 3-1-1.
