Evanston to Begin Church St. Project, Includes Bike Path & Rain Garden
Submitted by the City of Evanston

Starting August 1 for eleven weeks, the City of Evanston will be contracting improvements on Church Street from Ridge Avenue to Chicago Avenue. The scope of work includes streetscape and street resurfacing work in this section of Church Street from Ridge Avenue to Chicago Avenue. The streetscape will be extended on Orrington Avenue from Church Street south to mid-block on the east side.

The streetscape work will include replacing the existing pavers with a new concrete sidewalk with a brick border; installing new roadway curbing, as needed; replacing the existing tree grates and frames; and constructing a rain garden. The purpose of the rain garden is to catch storm water runoff. The water is then filtered and cleaned as it passes through the soil thus reducing water pollution. The street resurfacing involves grinding the asphalt; roadway base repair; and replacement of asphalt surface from curb to curb and driveway aprons.

A protected bicycle path will be built on the south curb lane from Ashland Avenue to Chicago Avenue. The protected bicycle path will separate bicycle traffic from vehicular traffic using different pavement markings, upright lane separators and parking reconfigurations. This provides for a safer cycling experience as bicyclists will not be traveling alongside vehicles. By placing the bicycle path in between parked cars and the sidewalk, car-dooring on the driver’s side is avoided and conflicts between vehicles pulling in and out of parking spaces is eliminated.

Also as part of the project, Orrington Plaza will be reconfigured and streetscape will be implemented to enhance the aesthetics and improve pedestrian safety. The plaza area will be constructed with porous and regular concrete and a rain garden will be installed as one of the sustainable features of this project.  A new bike shelter is also being installed on Church Street.

A project location map is located here>>>. The roadwork is part of the city’s continuous program to improve the roadway system throughout the community. This project is funded by the Washington National TIF Funds and Capital Improvement Funds.

Construction will begin on August 1 with the project expected to be substantially completed by mid-October 2012.  During construction, one lane of traffic will be maintained on Church Street during the entire project. The actual date when construction is planned will be noted on the temporary “NO PARKING” signs posted 48 hours prior to the start of the work. The construction activities will create some inconveniences for the abutting businesses and residents, but workers will attempt to minimize these issues. The street sweeping and/or neighborhood parking restrictions will be waived for a one-block radius around the construction zone. Allowances have been made to maintain pedestrian access to businesses on Church street and Orrington Avenue for the duration of construction.
