ETHS Builds on Success of AP Forum for 2012 Program
Submitted by ETHS

Evanston Township High School will host the annual Pathways to AP Forum – Increasing Access and Success in Advanced Placement Courses for current freshman, sophomore and junior students and their parents/guardians.  The event will be held on Thursday, December 6, 2012 at 6:30 p.m. in the ETHS Auditorium.  Based on the success of last year’s forum, ETHS is expanding the program to include freshman this year.

“Early awareness and thoughtful planning are keys to student success,” remarked Dale Leibforth, ETHS’s newly appointed Advanced Placement Recruitment & Retention Coordinator. One of the high school’s goals is to increase access and participation in the Advanced Placement (AP) program and to help ensure each student’s success along the pathway to and during their AP courses.

The December 6 forum will focus on access to AP courses, the supports in place to ensure success in AP courses, the importance of balance and well-being, the impact of taking AP courses on college planning and the influence of exploring interests and passions on career planning. Guest speakers will discuss each of those key focus areas.  One of the program highlights is a panel which will include current and former AP students.  AP teachers, teamASAP students (Team Access & Success in Advanced Placement) and other school leaders will be available for questions.

ETHS is committed to increasing access and success for all students, particularly in the area of AP, and a group of staff members has been developing structures for recruitment and retention in Advanced Placement classes. Leibforth has a vision that “every student should challenge themselves to the highest level and stretch themselves in an area that interests them. Taking AP courses while in high school is one way to accomplish this goal.”

ETHS offers 26 Advanced Placement course options in six department areas: English, Fine Arts, History and Social Sciences, Mathematics, Science and World Languages. AP courses offer a deeper insight into the subject matter and students are able to receive a college-level experience. Students have the potential to earn college credit by taking an AP course, which helps them stand out in the admission process.

AP courses are structured to encourage profound discussions, problem solving, cooperation, communication, time management, deep-level thinking, critical writing skills, discipline and positive study habits.  Because of the wide array of Advanced Placement courses offered at ETHS, students can explore their passion which may eventually lead to a major in college or to a career. Studies have shown that completing an AP course and receiving passing scores on AP exams increases the chance for success in college. Students are better prepared for their college experience, career and life after participating in the ETHS AP program. The school is continuing efforts to help ensure support and success for all students stepping up to the challenge of an AP course.

Beth Arey, College & Career Coordinator at ETHS, is one of the presenters on December 6 and confirms that “colleges and future employers are looking for students who challenge themselves. One element that is critical to this challenge is the depth of the student’s experience.”
