Evanston Police Hold Informational Meeting Regarding Unsolved Murders
Submitted by the Evanston Police Department

On Thursday evening, April 25, Evanston Police Chief Richard Eddington and members of the investigative services division held an informational meeting for concerned family members and friends of unsolved Evanston murders that have occurred over the past several years.

The police department wishes to thank Rev. Cherrey of the Christ Temple M.B. Church located at 1711 Simpson St. who graciously hosted the event along with other community organizers. Unsolved homicide cases are often difficult to bring to a successful conclusion due to the many factors that can affect an investigation such as lack of cooperative witnesses of the “no snitch” culture, the need for good physical evidence and the requirement for the criminal justice system to follow constitutional guidelines to bring accountability to the person or persons responsible for committing such a terrible crime.

Discussing these issues with community members on specific unsolved cases and coordinating efforts with Crime Stoppers of Cook County we are creating a message that these cases need to be solved by a cooperative effort between the police and the community. This Saturday, April 27th at 11:00 a.m. Crime Stoppers of Cook County will have flyers distributed in the area of Church St. and Brown Ave. by friends and family of Justin Murray who was shot and killed on Nov. 29, 2012 in the early evening hours in the 1800 block of Brown Ave.

Police and community members are hopeful that this will encourage anyone with information on this murder to come forward and cooperate with police in this investigation.

Evanston Police in the past four years have investigated 12 murders and of those, 7 are cleared and of those 7 clearances, 5 are still pending trial in the criminal court system. Currently, 5 homicides remain unsolved and actively open by detectives.
