Period to File Property Tax Appeals Opens Aug. 1

On Aug. 1, the Cook County Board of Review will begin accepting appeals from property owners in the Evanston for 2017 assessments, payable as taxes in August 2018.   

Cook County Commissioner Larry Suffredin, Cook County Board of Review Commissioner Michael Cabonargi, City of Evanston Tax Specialist Mitzi Gibbs and Evanston Alderman Robin Rue Simmons and Cicely Fleming will be hosting two workshops to discuss how to appeal your property tax assessments. The workshops are as follows: 

  • Aug. 2, at 6:30 pm at the Evanston Civic Center, 2100 Ridge Ave., Evanston, in the Council Chambers  
  • Aug. 3, at 6:30 pm at the Northwestern University Norris Center, McCormick Auditorium, 1999 Campus Drive in Evanston.  

“As the last tax bills showed, it is vitally important that you appeal your property tax assessment to ensure that you are paying only your fair share of any increase,” Commissioner Suffredin stated. “The best way to keep your property taxes low is to appeal your assessment annually to both the Assessor and the Board of Review.”

Homeowners in the 13th District of Cook County can also visit the Cook County Board of Review at the Skokie Courthouse, 5600 W. Old Orchard Road, Room #155 in Skokie. The Board of Review’s office in Skokie can be reached at 847/470-7522.  The Board of Review is also accepting appeals online at:  http://cookcountyboardofreview.com

City of Evanston Tax Specialist Mitizi Gibbs can also assist Evanston homeowners with property tax questions, who can be reached at 847-448-8168 or mgibbs@cityofevanston.org. You can visit the City of Evanston Property Tax Assessment Review Office at the Evanston Civic Center, 2100 Ridge Ave., Room G551 in Evanston.
