Streets Alive!, Evanston's annual open streets event, will returning to Main Street from 1 to 5 p.m. on Sept. 10. The free event will bring together residents of Evanston and surrounding communities to walk, bike, play, and enjoy a car-free mile of Main Street between Chicago Avenue and Robert Crown Park (at Florence Avenue).

The theme of this year’s celebration is “Share the Road,” and the goal is to promote safe sharing of roads and safe practices for drivers, bikers, and pedestrians. Free activities for all ages will be featured, including yoga in the park, martial arts demonstrations, exercise classes, live music by Indigo (a contemporary pop and R&B band), interactive art, outdoor games, bike decorating, and more. Selected vendors will offer their special wares, plus delicious food and refreshments will be available from some of the best local restaurants and food providers.

Again this year, Streets Alive! Will host the Evanston Green Living Festival, which will be located on Main Street between Ridge and Asbury avenues. This annual environmental fest features organizations presenting products, services, and ideas that encourage and empower attendees to lead more sustainable lives.

The event includes four of the City’s nine aldermanic wards and spans two parks, a lively business district and a major transit hub. “I’m thrilled to welcome Streets Alive! back to Main Street for the fourth year in a row,” said Mayor Steve Hagerty. “Streets Alive! brings together community members to celebrate and enjoy all things Evanston while exploring our beautiful public streets and spaces.”

“We are excited to be a sponsor of Streets Alive! and the Green Living Festival, which is in line with our mission ‘to preserve and improve human life,’” said Michael Fiore, Corporate Director of Environmental Occupational Health and Safety/Sustainability at NorthShore University HealthSystem. “As more people seek to live a greener life by reducing the pollution and carbon footprints they leave behind, we can look forward to better quality air, a cleaner environment and better health for ourselves, our loved ones and future generations.”

In step with the environmental focus of the event, visitors are encouraged to walk, bike or take public transportation to Main Street. The CTA’s Purple Line and Metra have stops on Main Street at Chicago Avenue.

The Evanston RoundTable is a sponsor of the event. More information is available at
