Clergy, Community Honor Police

The Evanston Police Department’s Clergy Team held a brief appreciation ceremony on May 23 in front of the Evanston police station, 1454 Elmwood Ave., honoring law enforcement officials local and nationwide.

Police and Fire Chaplain David Jones said, “We are here to recognize you, to honor you and appreciate you.”

Mayor Stephen Hagerty read a proclamation declaring May 20-26 Evanston Police Week and said, “The Evanston Police Department keeps us safe every day.”

Reflecting on the most recent school shooting, in Santa Fe, Tex., the Mayor said, “I feel safe in this community because of the training and leadership of the Evanston police officers. On behalf of the teenagers and community residents, I thank you from the bottom of my heart.”

Father Robert Oldershaw thanked Evanston police officers, and all police officers “for putting our safety ahead of yours.” In this country, 60 police officers have died so far this year, he said, asking for a moment of silence “for those who died in the line of duty or of self-inflicted wounds.”

National Police Week was started in 1962 by President John F. Kennedy. This year in Washington, D.C., the names of 360 officers killed in the line of duty are being added to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial.  These 360 officers include 129 officers who were killed during 2017 and 231 officers who died in previous years but whose stories of sacrifice had been lost to history until now. The National Law Enforcement Memorial bears the engraved names of the three Evanston police officers killed in the line of duty during the Department’s history.
