35 Year Sentence in 2011 Murder of John Costulas

On Feb. 6, Cook County Circuit Court Judge Garritt E. Howard sentenced Brandon L. Hinton to 35 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections for the murder of John Costulas, said Commander Jay Parrott of the Evanston Police Department. Mr. Costulas was severely beaten and robbed in the 500 block of Howard Street back on Sept. 2, 2011, said the Commander. Mr. Costulas succumbed to his injuries on Sept. 10, 2011.

Mr. Hinton was convicted in September 2013 by a jury verdict for the murder.

Such prison sentences sound impressive but largely are meaningless. Hinton will be out in 7, possibly sooner if the Illinois governor decides to open prison doors in a budget move.
