Starlight Concert Series Kicks Off June 10

The City of Evanston’s 2014 Starlight Concert Series kicks off on Tuesday, June 10 at 7:30 p.m. with a free “School’s Out for Summer” concert at James Park, 300 Dodge Ave. Entertainment includes hula hooping with Miss Rachel, a performance by the fabulous Surf Rock band The Concussions, a special appearance by Miss Mia and Ratso from the cable TV show “Chic-A-Go-Go,” interactive dancing with The Janes, and acrobatics by CirquesExperience! 

The Starlight Concert Series program runs through August 19 and features 13 free outdoor concerts at seven park locations throughout the city. 

In addition to the kick-off event, there will be another special concert for the “Juneteenth Celebration” on Thursday, June 19 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Twiggs Park, located on Simpson St. at Dodge Ave. The celebration will include fun activities from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. such as face painting, beading crafts, games and more! At 7:30 p.m., the main program will begin, including a meet and greet with the “Delany Sisters” from Fleetwood-Jourdain Theatre’s summer play “Having Our Say: The Delany Sisters’ First 100 Years,” spoken slave narratives and poetry, a drum circle, and a performance by the Christ Temple Church Choir. Hecky’s Barbecue will be available for purchase during the event. 

Other performers in the Starlight Concert Series include blues and soul group Andrea McNeal & The Hip City Band, electric indie rock band The Bad Examples, and up-and-coming Chicago folk-jazz band The Flat Five. The series will also feature Caribbean music from Nelson Gill and the Caribbean Rhythm Band, Latin Ska tunes with the group Los Vicios De Papa, and much more! 

Due to high demand, food trucks will also appear at this year’s concert series. On Tuesday, July 15, community members can purchase delicious bites from Chicago Cupcake, Grill Chasers, Hummingbird Kitchen, Sweet Ride Chi, 5411 Empandas, Taquero Fusion and Tamale Spaceship while listening to catchy pop songs at The Rhythm Rockets concert at Brummel Park, located on Brummel St. at Elmwood Ave. 

All performances are free to the public and most will take place from 7:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. However, the concert featuring Joel Frankel and Jane Stenson will take place from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, June 25 at James Park. To view the complete concert schedule, visit
