Council Moves Toward Selling Harley Clarke Mansion to State Agency
In a surprising development, the City’s Human Services Committee on Sept. 3 and the City Council on Sept. 8 discussed a proposal to sell the Harley Clarke mansion and its coach house, located at 2603 Sheridan Road, to the Illinois Department of Natural Resources.

Valli Produce is Coming
Valli Produce’s plans to establish a grocery store in Evanston Plaza, Dempster Street at Dodge Avenue, have expanded to include its purchase of the entire shopping center. Its plans were revealed at the Sept. 8 Administration and Public Works Committee meeting.

City Supports Little Beans Cafe's Request for a Property Tax Break
Evanston City Council voted unanimously and without debate at its Sept. 8 meeting  to "endors[e] the application of Little Bean Café... to the Cook County Assessor" for a reduction in property taxes for the former Osco drug store at 430 Asbury Ave. Once the application has been made, the Cook County Assessor's Office will determine whether to grant the requested relief.

Dick Peach, a volunteer for Evanston in numerous capacities, will receive the Corrine Passage Spirit of Evanston Award at the annual MashUp on Sept. 16. There are few organizations in Evanston that have not felt the touch of Mr. Peach’s enthusiasm and compassion.

Council Nuggets
Mostly positive developments greeted City Council members at their Sept. 8 meetings, which began with Mayor Elizabeth Tisdahl’s announcing, “The Mayor is in the house.” Former Mayor Lorraine Morton, sitting on the first row in support of Keys to the City recipients, acknowledged the crowd.

Main Street Transformed to 'Streets Alive!'
On Sept.7  people traffic replaced vehicle traffic on Main Street  from Dodge to Hinman avenues, as Main Street  became “Streets Alive.” Inspired by an event in Bogota, Colombia, founder and chairperson Natalie Watson conceived the project as a way to encourage physical activity and alternate means of transportation and help people rediscover the streets, Evanston’s largest public spaces.

'Kits, 'Cats and Kids to Transform Sherman Avenue Into a Block Party
Evanston’s ’Kits, ’Cats and Kids Block Party will turn Sherman Avenue into a family-orientated fun and food extravaganza on Sept. 18 from 5-7:45 p.m. in downtown Evanston. Sherman Avenue will be closed to through traffic between Church and Davis Streets to allow children, teens and adults to participate in games, activities and crafts while listening to a DJ and live music on stage.

County Board OKs Items to Limit Firearms and Boost Mental Health Funding on Fall Election Ballot
The Cook County Board of Commissioners has passed a resolution placing two non-binding advisory referenda on the ballots of Cook County voters in the Nov. 4 general election. Voters will be asked whether they support banning the sale of assault weapons and requiring universal background checks for firearm transfers and whether they believe the State should provide more funding for mental health treatment.
