Morning Rain Update

The City recorded approximately 1 inch of rain yesterday and has recorded approximately ½ inch of rain so far today. Public Works Agency Director Dave Stoneback reports, “We received only one basement backup complaint last night around midnight and it was determined to be a private problem since the City's sewer was not surcharged.  

“We anticipate more calls as residents get up for the day.  We have crews covering the city looking for street flooding and can respond to any backup complaints that come in.” 

The Forestry division has not reported any issues.


The first full day of summer. Yesterday’s lake temperatures were 68 at the Chicago shore, 65 at the Chicago crib and 61 at the Wilmette buoy.

City to Explore Demolition Option for Harley Clarke
City Council on June 18 voted to authorize the City Manager to meet with the organization that offered to pay for the demolition of the Harley Clarke Mansion to explore costs and the parameters of an agreement. The vote makes real the possibility the City will accept the offer put forth by the group, the Evanston Lighthouse Dunes, to pay for demolition or possibly deconstruction and restoration of the natural landscape.

Shooting Death of a 2018 ETHS Graduate
The Evanston Township High School family is deeply saddened by the loss of a member of our Class of 2018, Erin Carey, who passed away on June 19, according to the Chicago Police Department. An investigation is ongoing.

Evanston residents gathered at Fountain Square on June 2 to call for an end to gun violence. With them were survivors – including family members and friends left behind after a fatal shooting, speakers advocating for change, singers leading the crowd in traditional American songs, and dancers performing hip hop dance.

Until recently, demolition of the Harley Clarke mansion seemed an unlikely answer to the question of what to do with this City-owned property. But when the City Council on April 9 turned down a request from the nonprofit Evanston Lakehouse & Gardens organization for a lease, demolition of the mansion became more of a possibility.

Chicago Man Charged with Unlawful Use of a Handgun
One of the officers observed a magazine to a handgun in the interior. Officers then retrieved the magazine and located a loaded Smith and Wesson 40 caliber handgun.,, said police.

Evanston Woman Charged with Unlawful Use of Gun
The investigation led to the recovery of a Springfield XD9 9 mm handgun. Approximately six grams of suspect cannabis was also recovered, said police.

Council Nuggets: Highlights from the May 29 City Council Meeting
What on the surface appeared to be a rather sedate meeting contained fireworks as the  May 29 Evanston’s City Council considered big ticket items while debating seemingly routine items such as Mayoral appointments to volunteer boards. In the end, Council approved every proposed spending measure, and all board appointments as well. Tensions over the perceived budget crisis continue to mount, however.

Pace/CTA Revise Service Plan Proposal Following Community Feedback
In April 2018, Pace and the Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) announced a proposal to discontinue the CTA #205 Chicago/Golf bus route and provide alternate service by realigning Pace bus routes #208 Golf Road and #213 Green Bay Road. To solicit feedback on these proposed service changes, Pace and the CTA held a joint public hearing on April 24 and written comments were accepted through April 30, 2018.

Resolution Proposing 'Deconstruction' of Harley Clarke Mansion Referred to City Council
Alderman Ann Rainey, 8th Ward, asked that City Council consider an “immediate resolution” to be prepared by City Staff that would accept an offer from a community group to deconstruct the Harley Clarke mansion and restore the site to its natural state.

Robert Crown - Groundbreaking in Sight But the Bottom Line Continues to Soar
With construction set to begin on the new Robert Crown Center next month, City Council received a report setting the overall cost of the project at $52.9 million. The revised price increased from about $45 million just weeks ago.

Elect or Appoint a City Clerk?
At Call of the Wards on May 29, Alderman Ann Rainey, 8th ward, asked for a binding referendum in which voters would be asked to approve a change in the way the City Clerk is selected from an elected office to an appointed position. The matter will be referred to the City's Rules Committee for debate.

Council Approves 1727 Oak Project
Evanston City Council approved the development at 1727 Oak Street, an “active senior” building with a proposed 169 units. The vote was 6-2, with Aldermen Judy Fiske, 1st Ward, and Melissa Wynne, 3rd Ward casting the “no” votes.

Evanston Police Gun Buyback June 9
On June 9 Evanston Police will partner with Moms Demand Action of Evanston to give citizens an opportunity to turn in their guns  cash with a Gun Buyback from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Christ Temple MB Church, located in the 1700 block of Simpson Street.

Crown Field Turf Surface Proves Costly
A possible correlation between a crumb rubber and sand infill and cancer cases emerged at the May 21 City Council meeting, as aldermen decided on the type of material to use on the new artificial turf surfaces to be built at the new Robert Crown Center.
