Five students and a teacher from Evanston Township High School were recognized with special awards given by the Chicago Metro History Fair in June. Mattias Amezquita-Fox, Andrew Borland, Dakota Erwin, and Theodore Lambert received the Roosevelt University Center for New Deal Studies Award for Social Justice History and Flora Block received the Berrier Suburban History Award. ETHS history teacher Michael Pond is the 2017 recipient of the Arthur Andersen Award for Superior History Fair Teaching.

After advancing to the Illinois State History Fair, Mattias, Andrew, Dakota, and Theodore joined the State delegation at National History Day to compete against students from 50 states and six countries at the University of Maryland. Their project, titled “Fred Hampton: ‘You Can’t Kill the Revolution,’” was entered in the group website category. The individual exhibit category at the national competition also included a project by Carlo Di Bernardo called “Collective Action to Reverse History.” Over half a million students participate in local affiliated Natural Hhistory Day fairs across the U.S. and the world. Of those students only a few thousand are chosen to compete in the annual fair at the University of Maryland.

Flora, an Illinois State History Fair finalist, created an exhibit titled “Evanston: The Sting of Subtle Racism.” ETHS teacher Michael Pond, the history fair sponsor, works with students throughout the school year to refine their historical research and advise them on dynamic and creative projects.
