The after-school drama club from Nichols Middle School, through the support of Peaceable Cities: Evanston, performed their original production of “The Infinity Box” Feb. 26 at the Peckish Pig.
The play was written under the supervision of drama instructor Elisabeth Westphal, based on the prompt, “Taking a Stand.” Utilizing immersive theater techniques, the play explored social justice issues throughout history.
Immersive theater is a dramatic format in which audience members become minor characters in the piece. The performance also encouraged the audience to explore ways to get involved in current social justice concerns.
“Our event was very successful,” the club reported. “Some 60 people came to watch 20 Nichols Middle School students present their original theater piece. The audience was divided into three groups and moved from scene to scene throughout the one-hour production. The performance ended with a call to action for everyone to consider how they can stand up against injustices they encounter.”
