Black History Month at ETHS

During Black History Month, the ETHS Chapter of the NAACP has planned a month of activities to celebrate the rich history and legacy by African American ancestors. The theme this year is “Our past gives us strength, the future gives us hope.”

2013 MLK “Drum Major” for Justice Essay Contest

The essay contest is open to students in Evanston/Skokie School Districts 65 and 202. More information is available by contacting Sharon Weeks at

Poetry Slam: Somebody Better Say Something!

Fourth, fifth and sixth lunch periods

A celebration of poetry, rhythm and rhymes. This event is free and open to the public.

This day is Black History Month T-Shirt Day; t-shirts will be on sale for $5-$15.

 Feb. 12

NAACP Founders Day, 1909-2013, celebrating 104 years of fighting for freedom.

NAACP student members will distribute celebratory gifts to ETHS students and staff during passing periods.

Feb. 13

Visions of Black Women: I Am the Pearl of Great Price!

By invitation only.  African American female professionals will field questions from African American female students.

Feb. 14

NAACP student members will distribute gifts of appreciation to ETHS students and staff during passing periods.

Black Teen Summit 2013

Celebrating a Decade of Success

8 a.m. – 2:45 p.m., Oakton Community College

Des Plaines Campus, 1600 Golf Road, Des Plaines

Visions of Black Men: Black Men with Potential and Power

Fourth through sixth  lunch periods

By invitation only. African American male professionals will field questions from African American male students.

STOP the Violence Spoken Word Event

6:30-9:30 p.m.

ETHS Little Theatre

Admission: $5/student/$10

“STOP the Violence, STOP the Funerals: Somebody Better Do Something Before it’s Too Late!”

Soulful 70s Day/Food for the Soul Luncheon

Fourth through sixth lunch periods

$6/student;$12/ adult

*$1off  meal for those dressed in 1970s attire.

Traditional African American, Caribbean, and African foods. Open to the public.

T-shirts, $5-15; cookbooks/ $10.

Feb. 22

The MLK Project: The Fight for Civil Rights

Seventh period, ETHS Upstairs Theatre

A one-woman show that follows a Chicago student’s personal transformation through studying the Civil Rights Movement. Open to the public.

Feb. 28

The NAACP Image Awards Dinner

7 p.m., ETHS Terrace. $10/student;$20.00 per adult

Open to the public.
