Evanston Township High School’s Mock Trial Team advanced to the final eight round in the Illinois State Bar Association’s High School Mock Trial Tournament held earlier this month. ETHS competed against 40 schools in three rounds of competition at the University of Illinois-Champaign.

Students had to take a law test based on the case materials and Rules of Evidence. This year’s case, The People of the State of Illinois v. Brize Norton, was a criminal trial in which the defendant was accused of burglary and theft of six Lincoln-era photos. Students, acting as both attorneys and witnesses, prepared both prosecution and defense sides of the case as well as opening statements, closing arguments and direct and cross examinations.

Three ETHS team members received "Outstanding Witness" recognition: Peggy Giordano, Cate Rudy and Ella West. Max Goldsmith was recognized as an "Outstanding Attorney" in both preliminary trials. The team was coached by Alison Lupel Chiaro (ETHS Class of 1985), Kevin Kappock and Susan Brunner.
