New Principals for Dewey and Park
On March 19, the District 65 School Board approved a recommendation to appoint Donna Sokolowski as the next principal of Dewey Elementary School and Jillian Anderson as the next principal at Park School. Both appointments are effective July 1.

The District 65 School Board has focused on reducing out-of-school suspensions for more than 10 years, and it has made substantial progress since it implemented an alternative to suspension (ATS)  policy in 2009, and then strengthened the ATS policy and adopted a more holistic approach in 2014

Adverse Early Childhood Experiences May Lead to Learning and Behavioral Issues
Before several hundred people at Evanston Township High School on Feb. 13, Nadine Burke Harris, M.D., explained her journey in determining that the emotional and physical symptoms that many of her young patients were exhibiting were due to adverse childhood experiences (ACEs), such as abuse, violence in the home, or a parent suffering from mental illness.

The Black Student Summit was held on Feb. 6 and 8 as the first event in ETHS’s 2017-2018 “Social Consciousness Series.” The theme was “Get Woke, Stay Woke” which helped frame discussions on identity and the implications of social constructions related to race.

Council Approves Alt School Site on Hartrey
The arguing is over. The children –at least some of them – can come home. By a 7-1 vote on Feb. 26, City Council approved a special use for Evanston Township High School’s alternative school at 1233-35 Hartrey Ave.

Magical Disney Tour
One hundred forty Evanston Township High School students – 115 band members and 25 choir members – traveled to Disney World last month. Approximately 90 students marched in the Disney World parade at the Magic Kingdom.

Park School's Finances Raise Concerns About Sustainability
Financial concerns were the central focus of the Jan. 25 meeting of the Park School Advisory Committee, as projections reflect a 2% annual increase in revenues and a 4% increase in expenses, according to a report from committee member Jonathan Baum.
