ETHS Graduation
More than 800 students from Evanston Township High School walked the stage at Northwestern University’s McGaw Hall during the Class of 2016 graduation ceremony on May 22, 2016. The commencement speaker was ETHS alumnus David Epstein (‘98) who is a reporter, writer, and author of the bestseller The Sports Gene: Inside the Science of Extraordinary Athletic Performance.

District 65 Scales Down Technology Purchases
Saying she hoped to be able to add new technology in a better budget year, Stacey Beardsley, District 65’s Interim Executive Director of Curriculum and Instruction presented a trimmed and pared budget of $400,000 for technology for the 2016-17 school year.

District 65 Projects $500,000 Deficit in 2016-17, $11 Million in 2021
Using a zero-based budgeting process in crafting its 2016-17 budget there is a projected deficit of $500,000, Dr. Mary Brown, Assistant Superintendent of Business Services, told members of the District’s Finance Committee at its May 9 meeting.

Locker Thefts Discussed at D202 Board Meeting, Actions Taken
Allegations of theft in the Evanston Township High School gym wing were addressed at the most recent District 202 Board meeting on May 9. Several parents spoke passionately about their views of the situation. ETHS Superintendent Dr. Eric Witherspoon addressed the issue during his usual Superintendent’s Report. And a line in the consent agenda that passed with no discussion confirmed the “release” of a member of the ETHS safety staff.

'Alt School' at ETHS Puts Students Back on the Path to Graduation
So far this year, 42 students who were at risk of dropping out of school have received a high school diploma, thanks to the Evanston Township High School Alternative School.

'Talk, Read, Sing' Program Launches, Aimed at Children Birth to Three
“Talk, Read, Sing,” an early childhood literacy initiative designed to promote healthy development of children, ages 0-3, has been launched in Evanston. Parents who sign up for the program will receive texts on their cell phones that provide tips on how to promote their child’s brain development and early literacy skills.

ETHS Student Wins Princeton Prize in Race Relations
Evanston Township High School senior Maya Crowe-Barnes has been selected as the 2015-16 Chicago area winner of the Princeton Prize in Race Relations. The Princeton Prize in Race Relations was created to identify and commend young people who are working to increase understanding and mutual respect among all races.

Illinois Senate Passes SB 231
The Illinois Senate passed Senate Bill 231 yesterday by a vote of 31-21-3. The bill has been sent to the House. If enacted, School District 65 would lose $6.9 million per year and School District 202 would lose $3.1 million per year in State funding, once the phase-in is completed, according to a table presented to legislators.

 Evanston Township High School District 202 was recognized by the Illinois Chapter American Society of Landscape Architects Awards Program. The project “Evanston Township High School Campus Improvements” received a 2016 Merit Award in the General Design category.

Minority Achievement Is Focus of District 65 Board Meeting
A gap in performance between white and black students has persisted in Evanston public schools for decades. The meeting was scheduled several months ago at the request of the Evanston/North Shore branch of the NAACP, which submitted several questions to the District. In response to those questions, District administrators presented a Report on Black Student Achievement in District 65 and an Analysis of Black Student Achievement, both using data from school years 2012 through 2015.

The Black/White Achievement Gap at District 65
At a special meeting of the District 65 School Board on April 25, Peter Godard, Director of Research, Accountability and Data, presented a Report of Black Student Achievement in District 65. 

“Mirroring state and national trends, academic outcomes for black students in District 65 fall substantially short of outcomes for students with other racial/ethnic identities,” says the Report. “This trend in performance is long standing, and the social, economic, and educational factors that influence the persistence of this trend are complex.”

ETHS Receives Gold Medal in Nation's 'Best High Schools' Rankings
ETHS was awarded a gold medal ranking based on a comprehensive rankings methodology developed by U.S. News & World Report and a global nonprofit social science research firm. A four-step process determined the Best High Schools list, with the first three steps examining how well the schools serve all their students. The fourth step assessed the degree to which schools prepare students for college-level work.

Spring Band, Choral, and Orchestra Concerts at ETHS in May
Three upcoming concerts – on May 12, 17, and 18 – will showcase the vocal and instrumental talent of students at Evanston Township High School. All three concerts are free to the public and will be held in the ETHS Auditorium, 1600 Dodge Ave.

ETHS DECA Students Achieve Multiple Top Ten Finishes at State Conference
Students from Evanston Township High School competed in the Illinois DECA (Distributive Education Clubs of America) Career Development Conference in March 2016, with 15 of 31 participants finishing in the top ten of state for their respective competitive events.

ETHS Student Has Gun at School
On April 27, at approximately 9:20 a.m., the school resource officer who is assigned to Evanston Township High School was notified by school officials that they discovered an unloaded Walther P38 semi-automatic handgun in the backpack of one of their students. The officer took possession of the handgun and placed the student in custody.
