St. A's and Haven Scoop Up Award for Best-Themed Plows
Students from eight local elementary and middle schools entered the annual Paint Evanston’s Plows contest this year. St. A’s received the “Evanston Choice” award by popular vote online.

District 65 School Board Adopts Resolution of Intent to Issue up to $10 Million in Bonds
On Nov. 17, the District 65 School Board adopted a resolution of intent to issue an additional $10 million in bonds pursuant to Section 19-8 of the Illinois School Code. The resolution does not authorize the actual issuance of the bonds, but is a preliminary step that may enable the Board to issue bonds up to that amount without a referendum.

District 65 Leaning Toward Chromebooks, But iPads and Special Curriculum MacBooks Maintain a Presence
While the weighting appears to be toward Chromebooks, no school will have only one device.  iPads or MacBooks will be available in each school, equipped with software that currently provides advantages in teaching media arts, science and geometry and instructing students with a disability.

ETHS Proposes Course Changes
Administrators and teachers at Evanston Township High School have proposed adding, changing or deleting 17 courses for next year. Some changes are more to streamline, update or clarify the curriculum. Others are additions said to offer students more advanced coursework with more real world experience

Enrollment up 118 Students at ETHS
Evanston Township High School currently has the largest student body it has had in five years, according to a report presented to the District 202 School Board at the Nov. 17 meeting. At 3,238, there are 118 more students enrolled than there were last year and the new freshman class, 800 students, is the largest since 2004-05.

ETHS Athletic Program Scores Big on Many Fronts
An annual report on the ETHS athletic program given to the District 202 School Board on Nov. 17 highlighted an overall increased participation in sports and an increase in grades by participants. Also mentioned were several highlights from the year and some areas where athletics could be improved.

Guest Essay: Illinois 5Essentials Survey Data for District 65
On Oct. 31, the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) publically released the 5Essentials Survey results from the 2013-2014 school year. We want to take this opportunity to communicate our interpretation of District 65’s data and discuss our plans to integrate the results into school and district-level strategic planning.

School Boards Unite in Opposing Senate Bill 16
With a unanimous vote of 14-0, members of the District 65 and 202 School Boards approved a resolution at their Nov. 3 joint meeting, formally opposing a school funding bill that would drastically reduce the amount of money the state allocates to Evanston/Skokie schools. The two Boards worked closely for more than a month to craft the resolution.

ETHS Student Achievement Report: Mixed Reviews
Dr. Levy presented information on several standardized tests given during the 2013-14 school year. While there was marked improvement in some categories, a wide achievement gap still remains between ethnic groups and by income level.

At its Oct. 20 meeting, the District 65 School Board adopted a set of ambitious goals for Superintendent Paul Goren for the 2014-15 school year. The goals cover leadership qualities, specific priorities to accomplish this year, and student growth.

Evanston Cradle to Career Now Has 24 Partners
Dr. Witherspoon said 24 organizations have agreed to join EC2C, adding, "This is only the beginning." Forty-seven persons have applied for the executive director position, and the partners hope to have the executive director in place before the winter break.

School Board Candidates' Nomination Paperwork Due Between Dec. 15 and 22
Persons who plan to run for a position on either the District 65 or District 202 school board must file their nomination paperwork between Dec. 15 and 22. Candidates are required, among other things, to submit a petition signed by at least 50 registered voters residing within the district.

The ISAT Fiasco: ISBE Low-balls New Cut Scores, Where's the Accountability?
The combined impact of these shortcomings is significant. Data shows that an 8th-grader who scores right at the new "meet standards" boundary on the ISATs has a 10% chance or less of obtaining an ACT college ready score in 11th grade.

District 65 Launches Strategic Planning Process, 300 People Volunteer to Participate
District 65’s strategic planning process is "ready to launch," Superintendent Paul Goren told Board members at their Oct. 20 meeting, with the goal of having a strategic plan ready to present to the Board for approval in late March 2015.

Editorial: We Need to Monitor Senate Bill 16
There is a bill pending in the Senate, Senate Bill 16, that if passed into law will dramatically change the way in which the State allocates its funding to school districts throughout the State.We support this as an overall goal of achieving more equitable funding, but we are concerned about the impact that SB 16 will have on children in Evanston. The bill simply slices the same pie in a different way.

D65/D202 School Boards Approve Joint Literacy Goal
At a joint meeting on Jan. 13, the District 65 and District 202 School Boards approved a joint literacy goal to “ensure that all students are proficient readers and college and career ready by the time they reach 12th grade.” Significantly, the Districts recognize they cannot accomplish this goal alone. They commit to partnering not only with each other, but also “with community organizations, especially those involved in the essential work of early childhood education, to capitalize on every opportunity to meet this goal.

Organizations Asked to Make Long-Term Commitment to Evanston Cradle to Career Initiative
Almost 40 representatives from the School Districts, the City, non-profit organizations, Northwestern University, and Oakton Community College met at Evanston Township High School on March 28 to listen to an update on the Evanston Cradle to Career (EC2C) initiative and to discuss the importance of making a long-term commitment to the initiative.
