Hooked on Fishing: Where to Hook up With Good Fall Fishing
By Dick Peach

The big lakes in the area are either already in the fall turnover or will be this week. Fall turnover occurs when the surface water is cooler than the water at the bottom of the lake and the two change positions, with the surface water sinking to the bottom and forcing the warmer water to the surface. When this happens, the fish activity pretty much shuts down until the lakes stabilize – usually about a week to ten days later. Lake Geneva, Lake Delavan and the Fox Chain are all in this category, but the good news is that there are still some good fishing spots that do not turn over and should still provide some good fishing for awhile yet this year.

The Cook County Forest Preserve lakes are all reporting good fishing and not many fishermen – good news for those who want to get out there. Busse Lake is reporting some really strong bites on stocked trout. Fishermen are catching their five-fish limit of nice 12 to14 inch trout, a great eating size. With most guys fishing for trout, the pressure on the bass has been really light, so some very nice bass catches are being reported. Skokie Lagoons are having good action in northern pools 5, 6 and 7. Those who cast to the downed trees and other cover will be hooked up with some very nice bass fishing. Both major rivers in the area are reporting good to excellent fishing activity. The Illinois River at Starved Rock is having really good sauger and walleye action, especially at the bridges and the creek/river mouths. The Mississippi River is loaded with weeds right now, but at the weed edges and pockets the fish activity, especially walleyes and northern pike, is very aggressive.

The local fishing season is rapidly winding down for the year, but there is still time this weekend to get out there. Those who do will be able to take in the remaining fall colors and enjoy some quality fishing in area lakes and rivers with the family and friends. Until next time … keep a tight line.
