Stay Cool in the Heat of Summer's Caldron
Summer is here and it is time for fun in the sun:  picnics, beach outings, July 4th parades, outdoor sports, art fairs, music festivals.  But sometimes heat exposure and overexertion – even swimming or playing in the shade – can lead to dehydration, heat exhaustion and heat stroke; in some cases, they can be fatal. According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), extreme heat causes an average of 658 deaths per year, more than tornadoes, hurricanes, floods, and lightning combined.

Dog Day Cicadas Sing a Summer Love Song
People often fondly recall the hypnotic buzz of locusts on the soundtrack of their youthful summers. But it is cicadas, not locusts (a type of grasshopper), whose buzzing we hear during the dog days of summer. The annual “dog-day cicada” (Neotibicen canicularis) will emerge once again in mid-July to buzz, mate, lay eggs and die within a few short and noisy weeks.

Hooked on Fishing: Summer Fishing
Summer is starting to show itself, and the fishing is picking up. On many of our area lakes the bluegill are on the spawning beds and so are easy pickings. Bluegill spawning beds appear in fairly shallow water.
