Two residents launched their campaigns for alderman late last month. In the Fifth Ward, Delores Holmes, the current alderman, has said she would not seek re-election. Robin Simmons is seeking that position.

In the Ninth Ward, the current alderman, Brian Miller is running for mayor. Cicely Fleming is seeking that position.

Ms. Fleming, who serves as President of The Organization of Positive Action and Leadership (OPAL), kicked off her campaign on Oct. 20 at the Fire House Grill. Supporters from both in and outside the ward attended.

She said her desire to run stems from her work as an advocate for equity in government, an encourager for civic engagement, and perspective from her life experience growing up in a low-income household in Evanston and now as a middle-class mother.

Though titled the “Official Kick-Off,” Ms. Fleming said she and her supporters were proud of their early efforts to gain community support through an aggressive door-knocking campaign that has covered the majority of the Ninth Ward already. Ms. Fleming told those in attendance at the Fire House Grill that her goal is to be an accessible alderman, one who understands that “I can’t begin to represent people in the community, if I don’t know them and they don’t know me.”

Ms. Simmons officially launched her campaign at an event held at Family Focus on Nov. 17.

“For the last 10 years I have been preparing for my future as the next Alderman of the Fifth Ward of Evanston. Seventeen months ago, I began shadowing the office of Alderman, identifying challenges,  creating strategies for change, intently studying the culture of City Council, and working to create opportunities for all of us,” said Ms. Simmons.

“I am committed as a leader to celebrate our rich heritage and make Evanston the most livable small City for all of its citizens.”

Ms. Simmons says she has served the people of Evanston as a proven leader and business advocate. She is a member of the Minority & Women Evanston Business Enterprise Development committee.  She adds she has shaped policy for local employment programs and transformed lives working with local community groups.
