Le Tour de Noir Entreprise Evanston”

Tour of Black-owned Businesses in Evanston

February 1-29, 2016

Evanston’s Black entrepreneurs are on the map.  What a celebration! We invite you, your friends, and family, youth and community groups, to tour and support the wide variety of local Black-owned business establishments during Black History Month, February 1-29, 2016. These new and long-established businesses are located throughout the greater Evanston community, including central/downtown, north, west, east, and south neighborhoods. Come and experience Le Tour de Noir Entreprise Evanston.

Black entrepreneurship has a long and storied history in Evanston and on the North Shore, dating back to the 1870s.  The growth of black entrepreneurship is documented by the Shorefront Legacy Center, which houses a wealth of information that has been gathered over the years. It includes information about such pioneers as Richard Day, Mme. Josephine Taylor, Henry Butler, Dr. Isabella Garnett, Carrie Smith, Rudolph Penn, and Leon Robinson, Sr.  This legacy continues through such contemporary entrepreneurs as Jared Davis (Davis Transportation), Larry and Jean Murphy (Yofresh Yogurt Café and Coffee Shop), Clarence and Wendy Weaver (C & W Market and Ice Cream Parlor), Ginger Maddox (Just Turkey), Hecky Powell (Hecky’s Barbecue), and Wesley Poole (Wesley’s International Hair Salon), Nibra White (Fitness Avenues), and many more.  Resale and clothing shops, an educational tutorial service, a driving school, insurance agencies, etc., are also included in the 25 + brick and mortar Black-owned business establishments in Evanston.

Come out and help the Black Business Consortium of Evanston celebrate Black History month by visiting each of the business locations and receive a discount on products and services. Owners will be available to share their history, experiences, and insights.
