By Heidi Randhava

A lifelong Evanstonian who has achieved many firsts while serving the community and a partnership that epitomizes the spirit of successful collaboration were honored at the 2017 Evanston MashUp, which took place on Sept. 12 at Northwestern University.

The 8th annual MashUp, a networking event hosted by Northwestern University in coordination with the City of Evanston, the Evanston Chamber of Commerce, and other business partners drew hundreds of participants to the lakefront behind Norris University Center. Evanston Mayor Steve Hagerty and Northwestern President Morton Schapiro served as co-captains of the event, where Bill Logan received the Corrine Passage Spirit of Evanston Award and Northwestern University Dance Marathon and the Evanston Community Foundation received the 2017 Catalyst Award.

The Corrine Passage Spirit of Evanston Award is presented to an Evanstonian who has performed outstanding service to the community and who embodies the
mix of qualities that represent the City: courage, compassion, vision, and creativity. Award winner Bill Logan, the City’s first black Chief of Police, joined the Evanston Police Department in 1957 and served as a lieutenant, captain, and deputy chief before becoming police chief in 1984. He served for three years and then retired to become Director of Safety and Security at ETHS, where he worked for 20 years.

The Evanston/Northwestern Catalyst Award honors a person, organization, or business that acts as a catalyst in Evanston, making the City more livable, and represents the best of community partnership between Northwestern University and the City of Evanston. Since 1975, Northwestern University Dance Marathon (NUDM) has raised more than $19 million for over 30 organizations, raising over $1.2 million this year. Evanston Community Foundation (ECF) is dedicated to helping Evanston thrive as a vibrant, inclusive, and just community. ECF benefits from NUDM fundraising and works diligently to distribute funds to Evanston organizations.

The Evanston MashUp is intended to give Evanstonians and members of the Northwestern community an opportunity to make connections that continue the spirit of the event throughout the year.
