As last year, the YWCA Evanston/Northshore is using the big purse to highlight its participation in The Allstate Foundation’s annual Purple Purse Challenge, an all-out effort to raise awareness of domestic violence and funding for critical services. The goal is to win the nationwide challenge and receive an additional $100,000.

The purple purse is not only the symbol for this campaign, it is also an important reminder of the link between domestic violence and financial abuse.
Domestic violence affects one in four women. Most people think only of physical abuse when they consider domestic violence, yet financial abuse happens in 99% of all domestic violence cases. Financial abuse is an invisible weapon that traps victims in abusive relationships.

Allstate Foundation’s Purple Purse is the longest running national campaign focused on ending domestic violence through a proven solution: financial empowerment services for survivors.

Karen  Singer, president and CEO of the YWCA Evanston/Northshore shares a story from one of their clients: “I had a great job in the corporate world where I was able to take care of my husband and family financially. Even though my income supported the family, my husband controlled all of our finances. He was also physically abusive. I got really good at hiding my bruises with make-up, but I had to take sick days when it got bad.  One day a colleague handed me a card and said, “I don’t know what you’re going through, but you might need this.” The card had a number for YWCA Evanston/North Shore. Calling YWCA and getting help changed my life.”

Domestic violence and financial abuse does not discriminate, and it affects people of all races, genders, religions and income levels – even in Evanston.
