Fourth Annual Evanston Literary Festival Celebrates Books, Activism and Creativity

The fourth annual Evanston Literary Festival will be held May 12 through 20 at sites around Evanston to celebrate the City’s vibrant literary community and history. The festival will include dozens of free events featuring fiction, poetry, non-fiction, children’s literature, graphic novels, writing workshops and much more. Admission to all events is free.

The festival includes dozens of events with prominent authors, many of whom live or work in Evanston. Among them are National Book Award-winning author Charles Johnson at 7 p.m. on May 15 at Evanston Public Library, 1703 Orrington Ave.; National Book Award-winning poet Daniel Borzutsky (co-author with Guillermo del Toro of “The Shape of Water,” based on the Oscar-winning movie) at 7 p.m. on May 16 at the Library; Daniel Kraus at 7 p.m. on May 19 at the Library; and Audrey Niffenegger and Eddie Campbell discussing their new graphic novel, “Bizarre Romance,” on May 20, 2 p.m. at Comix Revolution, 606 Davis St.

The Evanston Literary Festival begins on May 12 with the Evanston Book Fair from 2 to 5 p.m., where local publishers, authors and literary non-profits will sell their books and offer information. That evening, the Festival will feature a Writers Resist event at 6 p.m. at Bookends & Beginnings Bookstore at 1712 Sherman Ave., where a wide range of activist writers will read their work.

Comix Revolution will also hold an event with the creators of the graphic novel “The Hunting Accident” at 1 p.m. on May 12  and a Mini Comic-Con with local comic artists from 1 to 4 p.m. on May 19.

Mother’s Day, May 13, will feature Northwestern University professor Pamela Bannos discussing her book about street photographer Vivian Maier at 4 p.m. at the Library. Northwestern professor Kate Masur will discuss her new edition of “They Knew Lincoln” with Niala Boodhoo at 6 p.m. on May 14 at Bookends & Beginnings, 1712 Sherman Ave. Northwestern professors Aymar Jean Christian and Miriam Petty will discuss race, gender and TV at the Block Museum at 6 p.m. on May 16.  Megan Stielstra (“The Wrong Way to Save Your Life”) and Renee Engeln (“Beauty Sick”) of Northwestern will speak at Bookends & Beginnings at 6 p.m. on  May 17. DePaul professor and Evanston resident David Faris (“It’s Time To Fight Dirty: How Democrats Can Build a Lasting Majority in American Politics”) will speak to Northwestern’s College Democrats at 7:30 p.m. on May 17 at University Hall 121.

The Northwestern Spring Writers’ Festival will be held May 14-16 with Alissa Nutting, Angela Morales and Rowan Ricardo Phillips speaking at the Hilton Orrington Hotel, 1710 Orrington Ave.

The Festival also features Evanston author Liam Heneghan’s new book on environmentalism in children’s literature at 7 p.m. on May 14 at the Library.

Amy and Dave Freeman’s 1,750-mile “Pedal to D.C.” tour, towing a canoe for their book, “A Year in the Wilderness,” will stop at Bookends & Beginnings at 6 p.m. on May 18. On May 19 at 4 p.m., RHINO Poetry will hold a poetry reading at Creative Coworking  at 922 Davis St.

The festival concludes with Nadine Strossen, former president of the ACLU and author of “Hate,” who will speak with Geoffrey Stone about “Sex and the Constitution” at 5 p.m. on May 20 at Bookends & Beginnings.

The festival – a joint production of Chicago Book Expo, Bookends & Beginnings bookstore, Northwestern University’s Creative Writing Program, Comix Revolution and the Evanston Public Library – was founded by Lynn Haller and John K. Wilson as a way of bringing attention to Evanston’s authors, independent bookstores and literary culture.
