The End of an Era at the Central Street Post Office ...
- Story and photo by Janet G. Messenger

Things won’t be the same at the Central Street Post Office now that Susan Guyton Sarac has retired as window clerk after more than 42 years with the postal service, including 17 on the job at Central Street plus another 25 at the Main and Davis St. stations.

A native Evanstonian, she started with the post office back in the 1970s and had her first postal ID card signed by Postmaster Fred Lindstrom, a major-league baseball Hall of Famer. At right, long-time co-worker Michael Gibson wishes her well after teasing her by creating a “Lost my Job” sign.
