ECF Appoints New Board Members and Officers

The Evanston Community Foundation (ECF) announces the appointment of six new members to the board of directors to serve three-year terms effective May 1, 2013. The new members at large are Pete Henderson, Patty Reece, Gene Servillo, Larry Singer, Keith Terry, and Judy Witt.  New Board Chair Joan Gunzberg, said “Each of these new board members brings a unique set of experience and talent to our foundation, providing valuable leadership as the Foundation embarks on a mission to fulfill our strategic plan.”  

The four members retiring from the board following distinguished service are: Mary Finnegan, Judy Kemp, Shabnum Sanghvi and Ronna StammJudy Kemp, the Board Chair from 2009 to 2011, was named the 2013 recipient of the Jim Kogen Foundation Spirit Award, an annual award recognizing exemplary board service.  President and CEO, Sara Schastok said “The service and leadership that these four board members have contributed over the years put Evanston Community Foundation on the journey we are on today.” 

The board elected a new roster of officers on April 10 to serve for the coming year.  The officers are Joan Gunzberg, Board Chair; Penelope Sachs, Immediate Past Chair; Anne Murdoch, Secretary; Bill Blanchard, Treasurer; Mike Brody, First Vice-Chair; and Judy Aiello, Second Vice Chair.

New Board Members Bios 

PATTY REECE is a retired District 65 teacher, and founding member and board chairman of the Warren “Billy” Cherry Scholarship Fund named in honor of her late brother, Warren Cherry, who was a principal at Lincoln School in Evanston. 

She is a community volunteer with FAAM and the McGaw YMCA, where she recently served as co-chair of the 125th year anniversary celebration. A native of Evanston, she attended St. Athanasius Elementary and graduated from Evanston Township High School before receiving a B.S. from Roosevelt University and an M.Ed. from National Louis University. Ms. Reece and her husband Robert have one daughter and a granddaughter. 

GENE SERVILLO worked for the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services, first as a social worker and then as an operations analyst designing and programming specialized computer systems. After leaving IDCFS he became a system analyst with the Centel Corporation and its successor, Sprint.  Mr. Servillo started his own computer consulting business in 1994. He has served on the board of directors of The Harbour, a girls’ shelter serving the North Shore.  He has been an active member of the Rotary Club of Evanston since 2001, and was club president from 2010-2011.  

Mr. Servillo graduated from the University of Illinois and attended graduate school at Northeastern Illinois University.  He has lived in Evanston for over 25 years with his wife Rosie Rees and two sons. 

KEITH TERRY is vice president of marketing and account management for AHA Solutions, Inc.  Prior to the AHA, he was the executive director of The Chicago Innovation Mentors (CIM) and served as director of strategic marketing for Abbott Laboratories’ Immunology franchise. He was also founder and president of Terry Partners, Inc., a consulting and international market development business, co-founder of Ocularis Pharma, Inc., a specialty pharmaceutical company, and general manager for PathoGenesis Corporation, and held various leadership positions at other pharmaceutical companies including Chiron and Upjohn. 

Mr. Terry earned a B.S. from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and an MBA from the University of Chicago.. He has served as a member and president of the Evanston/Skokie District 65 School Board, is currently president of The Chessmen Club of the North Shore and is on the boards of Planned Parenthood of Illinois and the Illinois Campaign for Political Reform. He has three children and has lived in Evanston for 20 years. 

LARRY SINGER MHSA, J.D. is director of the Beazley Institute for Health Law and Policy and associate professor of law at Loyola University Chicago School of Law. His teaching focuses on the regulatory and transactional areas of health law, focusing particularly in the areas of sale, merger, joint venture and acquisition of health care facilities. 

Mr. Singer has served as assistant to the general counsel at the American Hospital Association, a partner in the health law department at McDermott Will & Emery. 

Mr. Singer has served as board chair of the Benedictine Health System, chair of an institution for the developmentally disabled, and board member of the United Way.  He also served on the board of the Illinois Association of Health Care Attorneys.  Currently Larry is on the board of governors of the Alexian Brothers Health System. 

Mr. Singer is a graduate of the Leadership Evanston program and was co-president of the Kingsley School PTA.  He has four children and resides with his wife Maureen in Evanston, where he has lived for almost 20 years.
