Friends of Trees Mulch in May

Evanston TreeKeepers will be working in the area south of the Arrington Lagoon at Dawes Park on May 17, spreading mulch around trees to help them weather the summer months.

Mulch helps trees retain moisture during dry spells, discourages weeds, and helps keep mowers from damaging bark. As mulch breaks down, it builds soil structure to keep trees healthy and growing.

Volunteers should bring gloves and water and should RSVP at evanstontreekeepers@gmail. Last-minute help, even for an hour, is welcome.

Those who cannot make it to the volunteer mulch day can spread the word about proper mulching. There are lots of trees around Evanston right now that are being smothered with too much mulch and dirt, piled up against their trunks. This can start decay and weaken trees.
