After falling to Loyola Academy on May 11, the Evanston Township High School girls lacrosse team looked to bounce back in the regular season finale and gain some momentum heading into the postseason.

The Wildkits were able to do just that as they beat Carmel by a score of 8-5 on May 12 as part of senior night at Lazier Field in Evanston. After Carmel took an early lead in the first two minutes, the Kits responded with three straight goals which included two from junior Sarah Skidmore, and one from junior Madeleine O’Malley to give the hosts a 3-1 lead with 16 minutes remaining in the first half.

From there, Carmel bounced back with two more goals to tie the score at 3-3. Then at the 5:42 mark, junior Patricia Duffy gave the Kits the lead once again, but Carmel tied the score at 4-4 with 58 seconds remaining in the half.

After the intermission, the Kits set the tone early when Madeleine scored her second goal at the 21:49 mark followed by a goal from senior Grace Giangreco with 16:44 remaining, to give the Kits a 6-4 lead. Then Carmel cut the deficit in half with a goal with 14:31. But then Sarah helped seal the victory as she scored the next two goals, the second of which came with just under seven minutes to play to put the Kits ahead 8-5. Those goals proved to be more than enough as the Kits held on for the 8-5 victory.

Regarding her team’s performance against Carmel, head coach Sarah McKenna said, “It was senior night, and it was a great win, and it was great to send our seniors off for the regular season [with a win].”
Leading the way for the Kits was Sarah, who scored four goals, and Madeleine chipped in two, while Grace and Patricia added one apiece in the victory. Regarding Sarah’s performance, Coach McKenna said, “She played a great game. She had four goals and a lot of draw controls and when we can come up with the draw, it is a great way to win the game.”

With the victory over Carmel, the Kits finished the regular season with an overall record of 10-8, and gave them momentum heading into the playoffs, which pleased Coach McKenna. “It is great to get a win heading into the playoffs,” she said. “That last game right before the playoffs is really important for us to get that win and it is also really nice to get that last win at home.”

Coach McKenna continued, “Overall, in the regular season we have been really pleased. The team has really come together as a team so we are working really well together and we are excited to see where we are going to go in the playoffs.”

Next up, the Kits were set to take on Regina in the Illinois High School Womens LaCrosse Association Sectional quarterfinals on May 15 at Libertyville High School. If the Kits win that game, they would play the winner of Fenwick and Warren in the Sectional semifinals on May 17 at Lazier Field in Evanston. In the event they win that game, the Sectional finals are set for May 22. Regarding Regina in the first round, Coach McKenna said, “We did not play them in the regular season so we do not know much about them. [But] we just have to win the ball and score some goals.”

If all goes according to plan, look for the Kits to score plenty of goals and be in position to make a lengthy postseason run.
