ETHS Girls Lacrosse Cruise Past GBN with Big Second Half
By Brian Cleary

After falling to Central Suburban League South Conference foes Glenbrook South and New Trier in back-to-back games, the Evanston Township High School girls lacrosse team looked to get back in the win column when they took on Glenbrook North on April 30.

Fortunately the Wildkits did, beating the host Spartans by a score of 17-7. In that game, the Kits trailed 5-3 but consecutive goals by senior Madeleine O’Malley, freshman Bradley Belllios and freshman Sofia Lydon gave the Kits a 6-5 lead with 3:39 remaining in the first half. The Spartans tied it at 6-6 with 1:04 to go, the score at intermission.

From there, the Kits came out firing as they scored the first five goals of the second half to take an 11-6 lead with 22:16 remaining. Goal scorers in that outburst included seniors Sophie Levine, Kyle David, Sarah Skidmore, Zoe Lydon and Madeleine. The Spartans made it an 11-7 game with a goal with 19:48 remaining. But that is the closest the hosts would get as the Kits shut out the Spartans 6-0 the rest of the way to close out the 17-7 victory.

Regarding the team’s overall performance, head coach Sarah McKenna said, “We had a great second half. We made some adjustments [at halftime] and you cannot be mad at an 11-1 second half.” The Coach added, “We just had to make a few adjustments on the attack, find the open girl and talk a little better and once we did that it clicked.”

Indeed. The Kits opened the second half by winning the draw on five straight chances, which resulted in five straight goals in the first three minutes en route to outscoring the Spartans by an 11-1 tally in the second half, which certainly pleased Coach McKenna. “You cannot be more happy for outscoring a great conference team. This is a tough team. It is usually a real close game. So, for us to come out like that [in the second half] and really put all the things we have been working on all week, weekend and last week has been great.”

With the victory, the Kits improved to 7-3 overall. Regarding the season, Coach McKenna said, “It is going great so far. We have played a lot of tough games so far this season. We have hung tight with a lot of teams and so far we are pretty happy with the wins that we have come up with. We have played some close games, so we are happy with our season so far.”

In order for the Kits to be successful the rest of the season, the Coach feels her team has to keep playing the way they did in the second half of the Glenbrook North game. “We have to continue to play the second half that we played [against Glenbrook North], making sure we find the open girl, making sure we are playing solid defense, making sure we are talking and just working on all the basics we have been working on all year, and hopefully we will continue to win.”

Next up, the Kits were set to take on CSL South Conference foe Maine South on May 2. Regarding that matchup, Coach McKenna said, “That should be a good game. Currently their only loss is to New Trier. They beat Glenbrook South earlier this season and they are a good team, so we are looking forward to a good close game.”

After the Maine South matchup, the Kits take on Stevenson on May 4, Regina on May 8, Loyola on May 10, Glenbard West on May 12 and then Lake Forest on May 15 to close out the regular season.
