Evanston Soccer Coach Resigns
By Brian Cleary

Over the past six years, the Evanston Township High School girls’ soccer team was led by head coach Tasha Nemo. But in the upcoming season, the Wildkits will have a new coach at the helm as Ms. Nemo accepted a teaching position at Niles West andNorthHigh Schoolsand will not return as coach of the Kits.

During her time in Evanston, one of the highlights of her tenure was winning the regional championship in 2011. “I was proud of winning (the title because) we lost to Lane Tech the year before, so it was nice to win the regional championship against them the year after.”

But unfortunately, the Kits were unable to capture a second straight regional title in her final season in Evanston as the Kits lost to Lane 3-1 in the regional title game in May. They also were unable to get past Central Suburban League Conference rivals New Trier and Maine South, something Ms. Nemo wishes her team would have been able to do but it was just not in the cards.

“I would have loved to beat more teams in our conference and have finished in the top three. I (also) wanted to beat New Trier and Maine South especially, because I loved playing against those schools as a player, so it would have been nice to beat them as a coach.”

Despite that, Ms. Nemo, who will teach sophomore English at Niles West and North in the fall, is pleased with her performance as head coach during her six year stint.

“I did the very best I could. I believe I made some mistakes my first year, but I worked extremely hard to fix them in my second year as head coach. There was a lot more involved in being the head coach compared to the assistant coach, and my first year I had to learn some things the hard way,” said Ms. Nemo. “I accepted all responsibility for any mistakes that were made. I did not dwell on them, but made sure not to (make them) again.”

Ms. Nemo added, “I stayed true to who I was and tried to teach or show that soccer is more than a sport, it is a lifestyle, an attitude, and you have to be extremely dedicated to play it. The records were not the best, but there were lessons in the wins and the losses. I believe I did a good job.”

Next season, Ms. Nemo will not be a head soccer coach at either school in order to focus on teaching, but she says she will be involved in soccer in some aspect. “I want to concentrate on teaching, so I will not be coaching full-time at either school, but I do plan on volunteering and being a presence in the soccer program,” said Ms. Nemo. “Soccer is my passion and I cannot see myself not participating in some capacity.”

According to the ETHS athletic department, the Kits began the process of finding Ms. Nemo’s replacement and an announcement is expected in the months leading up to the Kits’ season opener onMarch 11, 2012.
