National Disability Employment Awareness Month
October is National Disability Employment Awareness Month – of which most people are unaware.  This lack of awareness exists because the evolution of disability rights is not a topic that garners much attention in our society.  But it should be, especially now, when so many of the basic benefits and rights for which the disabled have fought are under siege.

More Room: Alone Together
From Kafka to the Existentialists, alienation and isolation have been central tenets of modern life. As Ralph Waldo Emerson put it, everyone experiences “the same condition of infinite remoteness.” But is that really true? The facts suggest otherwise. We are all wrapped up in and connected by togetherness, and our remoteness is mostly an aberration, an artifact of the peculiar way we apprehend the universe.

Editorial: City Council Should Support Police Social Services
No budget with a $6 million shortfall is going to be met with wholehearted enthusiasm, so the fact that certain items have lighted up social media in the past few days reflects a level of involvement not seen in many other places.

More Room: Life's Priorities
There is a big upside to the downside of life’s brevity: it focuses our attention on getting things done.

Room for a View: One's Place
Racism, especially racism against blacks, has raised its ugly head in Evanston for decades.  I want to thank Evanston resident Bennett Johnson (former Evanston NAACP President) for pointing out at a City of Evanston meeting that racism in Evanston is “a community problem.”

Room for a View: The Best Game in Town
No doubt about it, the Cubbies are providing the best game in town. There’s nothing like post-season baseball and these days there is no team like the (W)rigleyville (W)inners of Chicago. The season still has to play out on the Main Stage later this month and, hopefully, the Cubs will share the spotlight. But, hey, its baseball and anything can happen.
