Keep Evanston Green
The holiday season – Thanksgiving to New Year’s – invites spending money: buying presents, sending cards, meeting friends for dinner or drinks, attending a holiday performance, making a family dinner, and creating gifts or decorations at home.

Room for a View: Giving and Thanks
November is Native American Heritage Month in the United States of America.  November was declared National American Indian Heritage Month in 1990 by President George H.W. Bush.

Room for a View: Anger
Anger tests anyone it involves, usually exacting a high price from those on both ends of it. But like most negative behaviors, it can also have positive effects.

More Room: Men Behaving Badly
Every day seems to bring more accusations of and discussion about sexual harassment, as women everywhere are emboldened to speak out and men begin to realize that sexual misconduct of any type (whether theirs or someone else’s) is no longer amusing or acceptable.

Room for a View: This Is, After All, America
I was, admittedly, quite upset about the outcome of last November’s presidential election, not because the Republicans won but because the process was so ugly and demeaning and the president-elect so divisive and obsessed with self. Almost a year later I remain sad and embarrassed by a process that came up well short of respect, good taste, and my idea of what America should mean to its citizens and represent to the world-at-large.

Facing Death, Keeping Their Humanity

For the most part, we have first-world dreams and problems. We live in a democracy – a threatened one these days – but one still governed by checks and balances. Our task these days is to keep our humanity when we are besieged by those who would divide us.

Room for a View: Nativism, Please
Too many non-Native Americans forget or ignore the fact that Native Americans (Indians) inhabited the land that became the United States for eons before Europeans arrived.  Americans who try to rally Americans against new/current, non-white/non-Christian immigrants/citizens with slogans that suggest that America be returned to its European origin should be seen as acting in ignorance and/or bigotry.  One can only hope that nativism will enlighten Americans.  Nativism, please.

More Room: What Can Be Done

It seems like every other Evanston conversation begins with a complaint and ends with a question. The complaint is about the state of the world, from dysfunction in Washington and Springfield to rampant gun violence, crumbling infrastructure, racial and gender inequity, and much more. The question is, what can be done?

Evanston Lakehouse & Gardens Creates Plan for ALL of Evanston
Our home-grown group formed with a goal to do something proactive, to improve our community, and help bring resolution to this longstanding debate with a creative solution that would benefit everyone. We’ve come a long way since then, and now stand as the sole respondent to the City’s RFP. We think our plan has real merit and urge City Council to vote yes on ELHG.

Editorial: If They Had Just Left It Alone
Censorship of a school newspaper by a School Board or administration is not new, nor is it particularly cataclysmic. How it is handled is the critical matter – as a platform for an open discussion of rights and responsibilities or as a bully pulpit to re-enforce authority.
