Waste Transfer Station Fees Should Mitigate Its Impact

At a joint meeting of the Second and Fifth Wards on June 9, about 20 residents provided ideas on how $1.26 million held in a City reserve fund might be used to mitigate the adverse impacts of the waste transfer station at 1711 Church St.

Memorial Day
For some, summer comes at a small price: Attending a Memorial Day service, with a few moments’ reflection on service and sacrifice, renders the remainder of the summer carefree. Out of sight, out of mind, those conflicting emotions about vigilance and violence, protectionism and patriotism, who went to war and who never came home.

Room for a View: 'Tis the Other Season
May and June are perennial gift-giving months: Mother's Day, Father’s Day, graduations, and weddings, more than enough to give Santa’s elves off-season employment. Gifts are meant to say many things, from “Thank you,” to “Love you,” to “Enjoy!”

Editorial: We Urge the D202 Board to Set High Expectations in Defining 'College Readiness'
One key question is whether the Board will aim at preparing students to obtain a C or to obtain a B or higher in freshman year of college. This decision should be made in the context of grading practices in four-year colleges, where 77% of the grades given are As and Bs. We encourage the Board to aim at preparing students to do at least B-level work in college.
