The City’s Streets and Sanitation Division will make bulk trash pick-ups for free throughout Evanston. The date of the pick-up is different in different parts of the city, and depends on the day residents have their normal trash collection. The dates are as follows:
Sept. 19 for residents whose trash is normally picked up on Thursdays;
Sept. 26 for residents whose trash is normally picked up on Mondays;
Oct. 3 for residents whose trash is normally picked up on Tuesdays;
Oct. 10 for residents whose trash is normally picked up on Wednesdays.
Bulk trash must meet required guidelines in order to be collected for free on these days. The trash must be less than six cubic yards per household. Six cubic yards is roughly equivalent to two couches, or four chairs, or one mattress and box-spring, or 25 medium garbage bags.
Quantities that exceed six cubic yards will be tagged as special pick-ups, and a fee will be assessed to the resident’s water bill.
Items must be placed out in an orderly fashion, i.e. bagged, contained or bundled; no loose garbage will be collected. Glass should be broken up, boxed, taped and labeled as glass.
Absolutely no hazardous materials will be collected, such as batteries, gas, oil, asbestos, medical wastes or paint.
No construction materials, tires or appliances will be picked up.
No garbage carts will be emptied.
Bulk trash must be placed out by 7 a.m. on the alley line or parkway. Crews will not remove items from private property or return for late set-outs. If crews are unable to complete routes on Fridays, collections will continue on the following Saturdays.
Residents with larger debris removal needs must call Streets and Sanitation to request special pick-ups, 847-866-2940, or contact SWANCC at 847-390-6820 to request a Dumpster. Both of these alternatives involve a charge.
Recycle Latex Paint Cans
Residents may place opened latex paint cans in the collection boxes at the City of Evanston Recycling Center, 2222 Oakton St., during the facility’s regular hours: Fridays, noon to 7 p.m.; Saturdays and Sundays, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Residents should not leave paint cans in front of the center when it is closed. Oil-based paints cannot be accepted.
