Evanstonian Denise Buchwalter-Loscezk was recently selected as a semifinalist in the 2009 AQS Quilt Expo. This will be the first year of the competition, which will take place at the Knoxville Convention Center in Knoxville, Tenn., on July 22 – 25.
Ms. Buchwalter-Loscezk, along with 303 competitors, was chosen to compete against others of her category while being judged by three “Quilting Authorities.” There are five categories in which the quilters will contend including; Quilter’s choice, On the Wall Quilts, SewTech (quilts made entirely by machine), Ultimate Guild Challenge Quilts, and Embroidered Quilts.
Though only one winner will take home the Best of Show award, all 304 of the semifinalists will exhibit their quilts at the expo. These quilts represent 37 states along with Brazil, Canada, Ireland, Japan, Sweden, and Taiwai. The quilts will also cover a variety of techniques and styles such as painting, embroidery, embellishments, and even Swarovsky crystals. Like many of the quilts, Ms. Buchwalter-Loscezk’s quilt, entitled “Nesting 2,” represents hundreds of hours of work.
