“Creature Double-Feature,” the fourth installment of Evanston Community TV (ECTV)’s popular, 20-minutes-per-episode “cult” program No-Budget Theatre (NBT), recently won the Philo T. Farnsworth Prize for Best Short Subject in national competition through the Alliance for Community Media (ACM)’s Hometown USA competition.
No-Budget Theatre – created by Mr. McComas, who produces it with fellow Evanstonian Brian L. Cox (with technical support from the Evanston-based Brella Productions) – premiered in 2004. The second episode, “Vader,” took Best Original Teleplay in regional (six-state) ACM competition in 2006; the third, “Beyond the Planet of the Apes,” took a regional ACM Political Awareness Prize in 2008; and the sixth, “Blood of the Wolfman,” took Best Short at 2009’s international Talking Pictures Film Festival – then screened last month at the juried Festival Detours in Greece.
NBT #7: “Gorzak’s Grab Bag” premiered in July and will be shown through August on ECTV Cable-6 at 4 p.m. on Tuesdays and 8:30 p.m. on Fridays.
The first six NBT episodes are available on a single charity-DVD sold by Mr. McComas, with all proceeds ($700 to date) benefitting blood-donation services.
Says ECMC Executive Director Steve Bartlebaugh, “No Budget Theater is another great example of the diverse and creative programming that comes out of the Media Center.”
