Mather LifeWays is moving forward with phase two of its development project, The Mather, in downtown Evanston. The senior living residence will ultimately comprise two buildings, located at 425 and450 Davis Street
, which will be connected by an underground climate-controlled passageway. The second building is scheduled to open in 2011 on the south side ofDavis Street
“Despite a challenging economy, Mather LifeWays is moving forward with phase two of The Mather,” said Mary Leary, president and CEO of Mather LifeWays. “We are thrilled that we have secured 29 new sales contracts for the new building within the first 30 days of sales.”
The new building will have 101 apartment homes and more than 18 floor plans, said Mather LifeWays in a prepared statement. Mather LifeWays is pursuing Gold Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) status for the new building.
Completion of phase one – the building on the north side ofDavis Street
– is on schedule, with the plan that residents will move to their new apartment homes throughout the month of October. “New residents of The Mather will add vitality to the downtown Evanston neighborhood,” said Ms. Leary. “Not only will The Mather bring new residents to Evanston, we will be adding new employees as well.”
Mather LifeWays says it is planning to add more than 100 full- and part-time employees to its Evanston workforce over the next six to nine months. These positions will include both salaried and hourly jobs, in such areas as building services, dining and food service and human resources and accounting.
“The Mather is a welcome addition to the downtown neighborhood as well as the entire City of Evanston,” said Elizabeth Tisdahl, Mayor of Evanston, in a prepared statement. “The fact that they have succeeded in the face of a tough economy is a great example of good planning and following through on their commitments.”
The Mather will feature a 10,000-square-foot fitness center, seven dining venues and lounges; 24-hour concierge service; and “plant-your-own” garden plots. As a continuing care retirement community, The Mather will also offer a full continuum of care from independent living to skilled nursing care. Last year, The Mather was named the nation’s “Best Proposed Continuing Care Retirement Community” by the National Active Retirement Association.
