About 70 persons attended the opening of Jeff Smith’s campaign office at 833 Foster St. on Sept. 17.

Seventh Ward Alderman Jane Grover introduced Mayor Elizabeth Tisdahl, who spoke briefly and introduced Mr. Smith, saying, “Jeff is exactly the kind of candidate that we need to send to Springfield. … I want to send to Springfield someone … who doesn’t know how to agree that dysfunction is OK.”

Mr. Smith introduced his campaign staff and spoke on what a different kind of Illinois politics would look like, exhorting his suporters to work for a future in which we can “believe again in Illinois.”

Mr. Smith is one of five Democrat candidates who have announced their bid for state representative from the 18th District.

The 18th District includes most of Evanston, approximately the eastern half of New Trier Township, and the northeastern corner of the 49th Ward of Chicago.
