Jeff Smith announces his candicacy

Evanston attorney and activist Jeff Smith formally announced his campaign for State Representative for the 18th District. A crowd of about 40 persons attended the announcement, held at the American Legion Hall on Central Street on June 28.

“The disconnect between the government and the general public,” Mr. Smith said, “has spawned distrust and cynicism.”  He identified several issues he hopes to be able to address, should he be elected: political reform, education funding, the economy and jobs-creation, pensions and the environment.

“The lack of political reform over the past 30 years,” Mr. Smith said, has resulted in, among other things, “legislators choosing their districts rather than voters choosing their legislators.” For the environment, he said, “We cannot afford to put off that which we can do now.”

Noting that the 18th Legislative District has “some of the most affluent zip codes and some terrible pockets of poverty,” Mr. Smith said, “We have extraordinary challenges as well as extraordinary opportunities. … and it is my intention to become the candidate for State Representative from the 18th District.”
