Editor:

The residents of the 18th Legislative District are fortunate to have a slate of excellent candidates to fill the Illinois Assembly seat being vacated by Julie Hamos. I believe, however, that Jeff Smith is the best candidate to carry on Julie’s excellent work for Illinois’ citizens. He is a long-time student and teacher of progressive political thinking and at this point in our history that is what we need.

Additionally, Jeff’s knowledge of local, regional and state issues is unmatched by any other candidate. His history of community involvement, from scout leader to organizer and president of the Central Street Neighbors Association (CSNA) has established him as a man of considerable integrity.

Jeff’s leadership of CSNA transformed the organization from a group of concerned residents to a strong voice in the development of Evanston’s Central Street Corridor Plan. He and CSNA have expanded to play an important role in providing venues for residents, candidates and elected officials to discuss a broader range of issues concerning the greater area.

As a legislator in Springfield, Jeff will ask the difficult questions and work tirelessly to bring progressive ideas and working solutions to the Legislature (General Assembly).

Please join me in supporting Jeff Smith for State Legislature in the February 2, 2010 Illinois Democratic Primary.

Evanston 6th Ward Alderman
