Amnesty International-Group 50, Evanston/Rogers Park, will commemorate International Human Rights Day at 7 p.m. on Dec. 10 at the Evanston Library, 1703 Orrington Ave. The program is titled “Torture… School of the Americas, Bagram, Abu Ghraib, Guantanamo … Where Do We Stand Now?”
Among the speakers will be Evanston resident Mario Venegas, himself a victim of torture by the Chilean government. Mr. Venegas will also facilitate the program. Other speakers will be Sister Dianna Ortiz, a Catholic Ursuline Nun who was abducted and tortured while serving as a missionary in Guatemala in 1989; Gary Isaac, Habeas Counsel and Political Strategist on detainee issues who has worked extensively on behalf of Guantanamo detainees; and Jamal Watkins, Midwest regional director for Amnesty International USA.
