City Manager Wally Bobkiewicz has announced the appointment of Lehman O. Walker as director of community development. Mr. Walker will begin his duties on Dec. 7.
Mr. Walker brings to the position more than 30 years of municipal community development experience both in the United States and Canada. Since 1988 he has been director of community development for the city of University City, Mo. Before that, Mr. Walker served for six years as general manager of planning and development for the city of Surrey, British Columbia, Canada, and four years as director of planning and community services for the City of Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada.
Mr. Walker received a bachelor’s degree in social science, a master’s degree in city and regional planning from California State University, Fresno, and a second master’s degree from the Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs at Syracuse University in public administration. He is a member of the American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP).
“Mr. Walker brings to Evanston a wealth of community development and economic development experience,” said Mr. Bobkiewicz. “His last 11 years in working for University City has exposed him to many of the same challenges faced by Evanston.”
The community development department provides overall program administration and coordination for housing, planning, zoning, economic development, property standards, building permits and construction activities.
