Two students at Chute Middle School, eighth-grader Luis Avila and seventh-grader Caroline McCance, entered the Solid Waste Agency of Northern Cook County’s Trashy Fashion Show held last month.
Luis designed a recycled and restyled outfit for Caroline to model. The dress featured beads made from magazines and a skirt embellished with four geometric designs made from small squares of newspaper. Luis also handcrafted the hat, jewelry, shoes and a purse from recycled materials to complete Caroline’s ensemble.
The purpose of the show, held in conjunction with “America Recycles Week,” is to call attention to the need to “think before you throw something away” and to divert reusable and recyclable materials from becoming part of our landfills. Congratulations to Luis and Caroline for their dedication to this project and to supporting recycling efforts at Chute School and throughout the community.
