Brillianteen serves as an event that brings the community together year after year, giving students, who otherwise may not have the opportunity – a chance to be involved in music and the arts.
Joseph, written by the dynamic duo of Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice. Andrew Lloyd Webber (Jesus Christ Superstar, Evita, Phantom of the Opera) wrote the music and Tim Rice ( Jesus Christ Superstar, Evita, Aladdin, Lion King) wrote the lyrics. It is based on the biblical story of Joseph from the Old Testament. This lighthearted family-friendly musical tells the story of Joseph (Josh Hamburg) and his brothers. Originally written as a “pop cantata” in 1968 for a school choir in London, Joseph made its Broadway debut on Jan. 27, 1982. The film adaptation was produced in 1999.
The Narrator (shared by Anita Babbitt, De’erin Hickman, Veronika Lewis, Torrie Meliska, Sara Roth and Claire Sengupta tells the story through word and song, guiding the audience expertly through the story of Joseph and his brothers. Joseph is one of the few major British musical theatre shows with hardly any spoken dialogue, being almost completely in song.
The Brillianteen 2010 Showboard is led by ETHS senior Emma Ashton and ETHS senior Rachel Hirsh as the Stage Manager. Shun Tucker, the YMCA’s Brillianteen manager, coordinates the adult creative team. This group of volunteers includes Judy Kemp (Director), Cindi Schuneman (Choreographer), Linda Perney (Music Director) Trimmy Stammel (Technical Manager) Sarah Flax (Business Manger), Ellen Gradman (Set Design) and Jan Perney (Accompanist). For the past 59 years, Brillianteen has provided area high school juniors and seniors with the opportunity to experience every aspect of putting on a Broadway show. Students, under the guidance of adult volunteers, are charged with everything from creating the costumes to building the sets. Through this no-cut program, the teenagers sing, dance, act, or are part of a committee managing all the behind-the-scenes action. Brillianteen is administered by the McGaw YMCA an open charitable association that promotes growth in spirit, mind and body through programs and services for all our diverse community.
