Over the last three months, cheers have erupted from the City of Evanston’s Robert Crown Community Center and Ice Complex, as patrons and staff celebrated being the training ground for many award-winning athletes.
The athletes include an Olympic Gold Medal-winning speed skater, national and international award-winning figure skaters, and members of the Center’s three regional award-winning synchronized skating teams. The Center has served as a training ground for these skaters and thousands of other participants, offering dozens of classes for every age and skill level, as well as public skating sessions.
On Feb. 17, Shani Davis won a gold medal in the 2010 Olympic Games’ 1,000-meter speedskating event. He is now preparing for the 1,500-meter on Feb. 20, where he is a race favorite and the current World Record holder. Mr. Davis learned to skate with the Evanston Speedskating Club, starting at age six, and returns to Robert Crown Center regularly. He also won a gold and silver medal in the 2006 Olympic Games.
Because Mr. Davis is still competing in the Olympics and will go directly to the World Cup, to be held March 6-7 in Germany, a date for a celebration honoring him has not yet been determined.
