On March 18 and 19, 250 Haven Middle School kids will showcase the 30th anniversary of “Haven Help Us,” performing on stage or as crew members back stage. On November 20,1980, the original production of Haven Help Us! showcased 109 seventh- and eighth-graders in 25 numbers with piano accompaniment.
Since that time, Haven Help Us has thrived under the support of eight principals. The show has run continuously, save for two dark years (1992-1994), for 30 years. Karaoke and soundtracks have replaced the parodies of popular music; and videos now play a part in the production. In keeping with tradition, however, most of the writing was done by Haven parents, using ideas from the student Writer’s Workshops held last fall. Also in keeping with tradition, talented parents have shared their knowledge with the students.
Crew kids have learned how to stage numbers, make props and build sets. Moreover, during the performances, all of the sound and lighting responsibilities are the responsibilities of crew kids.
This year Haven Help Us hired Urban Beat Dance to choreograph and run dance rehearsals. Haven and HHU alum Casey Scherrer of UBD instructed nearly 80 students in three all-dance numbers.
Performances of HHU will be at 7 p.m. on March 18 and 19 at Haven Middle School, 2417 Prairie Ave. Tickets are $5.
