Evanston Township High School senior Jeffrey Brown won the heavyweight (285 lbs.) class state wrestling championship on Feb. 20 in Champaign.

At a celebration party held for him at ETHS on Feb. 22, Superintendent Eric Witherspoon said, accompanied by the cheers of about 80 of Jeffrey’s friends, “I’m pleased to be here to honor the High School heavyweight champ, Jeffrey Brown.” Dr. Wither-spoon said to Jeffrey, “You are also a champion of a human being. You are an exemplary student at the school and have excelled in three sports. You are a model for everyone at ETHS and for everyone in the State of Illinois.”

Chris Livatino, athletic director of ETHS, said Jeffrey had a 49/1 record for the season, and that he beat the only person he lost to during the regular season in matches in conference, regionals and sectionals. Jeffrey, said Mr. Livatino, is “one of the nicest, humblest, good persons we have had the pleasure of working with at this school.” He said Jeffrey has been awarded a full-ride football scholarship to the University of Miami.

Head wrestling coach Rudy Salinas said of Jeffrey Brown, “I cannot say enough about how he brought the program and team to another level. … It is beyond words. It is surreal. … Nobody here is surprised you are the state champion.
