The Evanston Township High School Math Department is creating a scholarship to honor John Benson, who will retire in June after a 41-year teaching career. The scholarship will be awarded on a yearly basis to students who wish to pursue a career in teaching mathematics. During Mr. Benson’s 40 years at ETHS, he has received the Teacher Excellence Award from ETHS, a Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics Teaching and the T.E. Rine Secondary Mathematics Teaching Award from the Illinois Council of Teachers of Mathematics.
In recognition of the dramatic impact Mr. Benson has had on his students, and in light of his contributions to the field of math education, the ETHS Math Department is establishing a scholarship in Mr. Benson’s name to recognize students who plan to teach mathematics at any level and who embody his ardent and exuberant desire to share the beauty of math with their students.
Donations are now being accepted to fund this scholarship. Contributors may make checks payable to Evanston Township High School, write “John Benson Scholarship” on the check memo line and send them to Valerie Ripple, Math Dept., ETHS, 1600 Dodge Ave., Evanston 60201.
